Las Vegas, April, 1997
This project blossomed after a summer concert by Laura Taylor in the Government Center, the high point of which was Laura’s arrangement of the Porgy and Bess Medley, which received a roaring reception and was a foundation for the added string and horn arrangements by her good friend, guitarist Joe Lano. Jack Sheldon and Red Holloway were the headliners in the concert, and graciously brought their talented (and world famous) chops to the efforts already in progress. When the fabulous Candoli brothers, Pete and Conte, were coming back for one of their many engagements here, they also consented to add their unique and fabled talents! Laura’s jazz mentor, Alan Grant provided the venue for all these jazz greats to venture to Las Vegas, not only through the summer jazz concerts. but through his legendary award-winning show and radio broadcast, Alan Grant’s Monday Night Jazz. The rest is not yet history. From the awesome pool of talent that Las Vegans share came the special contributions of her trio from the concert and John Abraham’s dynamite arrangement of the Jobim classic, One Note Samba. Charles McLean provided encouragement, moral support, valuable technical critique, and an incredible sound on his reeds. Add to this the fine talents of Joey Singer, Chris Gordon, Brace Philips. and the very talented string and horn sections and history! -dm
